In addition, forest loss due to deforestation exacerbates this problem. Forests function as regulators of water flow, absorb rainfall, and slow the flow of water into rivers and seas. As forest cover decreases, the capacity to manage rainwater also decreases, increasing the risk of flooding. Therefore, reforestation and forest protection are important steps in mitigating flood risk. Inadequate infrastructure is also a risk factor in dealing with flooding. Large cities are often ill-equipped to cope with more frequent and severe flooding, with blocked drains and less efficient drainage systems. Investments in green infrastructure and natural protection can help reduce the impact of flooding by increasing rainwater absorption. In addition to the physical impacts, floods have serious social and economic consequences. People in vulnerable areas are at risk of losing their homes, property and even lives. The agricultural sector, which is often the backbone of local economies, is also under threat. Submerged agricultural land can result in major losses, increasing the threat to food security.
