Rory McIlroy shook off his second-round struggles to record a bogey-free one-under 71 and regain the lead at The Masters. He will take a two-shot advantage into the final round of golf at Augusta, but he must contend with a host of other challengers. Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler, Shane Lowry, Jason Day and Ludvig Aberg are all within five shots of the Northern Irishman.
Rose was unable to build upon his impressive seven-under 65 on Thursday and slumped to a three-over 75 on Saturday. He missed a number of birdie opportunities and struggled with his putting, particularly at the 18th hole where he lost out in a play-off to Sergio Garcia last year.
The American was the only player to card two rounds in the 60s this week but he is still seeking a first Masters title. He needs to improve his approach play over the weekend if he wants to win at Augusta. In the past decade, Masters winners Jordan Spieth, Danny Willett and Tiger Woods have all led the field in strokes gained-approach.
The pair are tied for the lead but McIlroy has an opportunity to move further clear of his rival with a birdie at the par-four third. The former US Open champion has a good chance of making the green in regulation as he hits his drive just 24 yards short of the fairway and then chips on to the green. He misses the birdie putt but holes his par putt to go to six under.
