The World Series is the pinnacle of baseball, a game that is played in one of the most intense atmospheres in professional sports. The event is a chance for teams to put all of their hard work on display in a matter of days and a chance for the most talented players to come together to determine baseball’s ultimate champion. The World Series has a long history of thrilling moments and incredible accomplishments. Here are some of the most memorable moments in World Series history.
THE MOST EPIC GAME-WINNING HOMER
Edgar Renteria’s World Series-winning homer in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series against the Padres will go down as one of the most amazing at-bats in postseason history. The ball traveled deep into the right-field upper deck, giving the Tigers the win and putting Boston on the edge of despair. It was not until Carlton Fisk came up to bat that the Red Sox saw the light. He hit a long drive that seemed to hug the foul line and looked as though it would be called foul. But he waved his arms toward fair territory and the ball listened, landing in fair play for the game-winning home run and evening the World Series at two games apiece.
The NLCS hero, who had injured his leg in the previous series, was not expected to participate in the World Series, but he surprised all in attendance and watching on TV by pinch-hitting in the ninth inning of Game 7. After getting two quick strikes, Gibson worked the count full before launching a walk-off homer into right field, creating iconic pronouncements from both legendary announcers Vin Scully and Jack Buck.
